What to expect when you are referred to us

Your GP or endocrinologist (or in some cases another specialist) may make a referral to us.

Once we have received your referral you will be offered an appointment to see us in outpatients at one of our three hospital sites.

At your outpatient visit, you will see a member of the team who will ask you about your symptoms or reason for referral, your medical history (including any family members with relevant medical conditions), a list of any medications you take, and other detailed questions (such as your occupation) which may be relevant to your diagnosis and treatment.

You may then require further investigations such was blood and/or urine tests and/or scans.

If surgery is recommended for you, the team will discuss the procedure with you in the clinic and answer any questions you have.  You will then be placed on the waiting list and contacted when there is a date available for your surgery.

Once you have a date for surgery you will be invited for a pre-assessment appointment to check your general fitness for anaesthetic.

At this appointment, you will be given instructions on

  • what time and where to attend for surgery
  • what time to stop eating and drinking before your surgery
  • whether you need to stop any medications (or commence any specific preparations)
  • what to bring with you to hospital.
